How to Save Money on Gas

Gas is getting more expensive again after having had a bit of a break over the New Year. Hopefully 2011 will not end up being another expensive gas year, but there are ways to save money on gas short of getting permits for and installing your own large underground gas tank (most likely not permitted in your city anyway).

Ways to save money on Gas right now.

The first and most obvious tip is to drive less. On the face of it, this is trivial advice but if you dig deeper there are certain things we can do to in fact drive less. One of the most important is to plan trips before you set out and map them out so you go from one place to another in a big circle without retracing your path keeping the driving distance as short as possible. This may involve scheduling appointments and planning errands in order to keep your driving distance as short as possible. If you have business further away from home, make sure to take care of any other items of business in that area during that trip if it can be planned in advance to avoid unneeded longer distance trips a few days later. This type of local trip planning also saves on time which is ultimately worth money as well.

If the commute is too long, consider moving closer to work or at least using the TTC, GO train in Toronto, metro or other public transportation if available. If this is not convenient in your city or if the public transportation path for the commute involves changing busses or other nonsense that may substantially increase the commute time, then that is in the end a waste of time and not recommended for that situation. But there are many people that are situated on a main public transportation route or line and those are the people who can at least once in awhile use this method of transportation as an alternative and save on gas expenses (depending on how much local transportation costs, but with skyhigh gas prices, public tranport will most likely be cheaper).

You can also walk short distances if there are two errands close to each other instead of driving from one to the other, park somewhere in the middle and walk a bit. Healthy too and counts as exercise.
